ASCPT Member of the Month
The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities. ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Stephen P. Spielberg as the June Member of the Month. Stephen P. Spielberg, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Pediatrics, Pharmacology and Toxicology at Dartmouth Medical School and a Principle Investigator at the Institute for Pediatric Innovation in Hanover, NH. An active member in the Society since 1986, Dr Spielberg has shown great commitment to the success of ASCPT and the field of clinical pharmacology. Dr. Spielberg unequivocally credits his membership in ASCPT with helping his career: "the interactions through the Society, intellectual activities at the meetings, and mentorship, association building life-long colleagues and friends have immeasurably helped me focus, learn and develop national and international associations that in turn have fostered my research, educational and 'organizational' efforts." He believes that ASCPT uniquely connects "the academic, the industry, the regulators, MDs, PharmDs, PhDs, [etc.]." He believes this invaluable trait is highly beneficial, as "the future will depend on unique public-private partnerships and cross-disciplinary collaboration." Dr. Spielberg sees a number of challenges facing the fields of medicine and pharmacology, including irrational funding and a lack of "dialogue about directions in health care just at a time the science can actually lead us to great accomplishments." He believes that the US in particular lacks substantial "therapeutics education" and sees a solution through "grounding of all practitioners in basic principles of fundamental and applied therapeutics." Dr. Spielberg believes clinical pharmacology's role in "translational medicine" is vital because pharmacologists "are the ultimate specialists in the drugs themselves and in how responses for good or bad occur in humans." Most importantly, Dr. Spielberg advises to "keep our "eyes on the prize" of ever better therapeutics for those in need, draw on the best of evolving science and technology and continuously focus on how we can contribute." Thank you, Dr. Spielberg, for your valuable leadership and continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
